Bhubaneswar is surrounded by many temples and historical sites. Of these, the Shanti Stupa or Dhauligiri, situated on the banks of the Daya River, is more prominent. It represents the bravery of the Kalinga Warriors, who sacrificed their lives to defend the homeland. Similarly, it represents the power of non-violence, where the cruel Chandashoka king was transformed into a virtuous, simple and peaceful person. As we know, world peace is very important to the Shanti Stupa or Dhuligiri because of its historical background. It represents either the 262 B.C.E., or the Mauryan Empire, or the great King Ashoka.
