- Bhubaneswar is a historic city. It has witnessed many historic events, yet there are many historical monuments. Bhubaneswar is surrounded by many temples and historical sites. Of these, the Shanti Stupa or Dhauligiri, situated on the banks of the Daya River, is more prominent. It represents the bravery of the Kalinga Warriors, who sacrificed their lives to defend the homeland. Similarly, it represents the power of non-violence, where the cruel Chandashoka king was transformed into a virtuous, simple and peaceful person.
- As we know, world peace is very important to the Shanti Stupa or Dhuligiri because of its historical background. It represents either the 262 B.C.E., or the Mauryan Empire, or the great King Ashoka. King Ashoka's empire extended from Mysore in the south to Balochistan in the east. Kalinga (Odisha) did not belong to his country. In 262 B.C. King Ashoka attacked the Kalinga with lakhs of troops. Peace-loving people in Kalinga are not afraid of this.

- Although there was not a large army like Asoka, the peasants were ready to defend him. In this manner, several thousand Kalinga men resisted Ashoka to protect the motherland. There was fierce fighting between them. The fighting took place near Dhaulik near the Daya River. More than 100,000 people were killed on the battlefield due to the blood flow of the brave hunters of Kalinga, even the waters of the Daya River became red.
- King Ashoka won the battle. A Buddhist monk observed the brutal nature of the king and approached the king. He said, "King Ashoka, you have killed over 100,000 people to enlarge your empire. The blood of the river has turned red because of these brave worries. What have you gained by this? Can you give life to a dead soldier?" He realized what he had done. Ashoka repented with bitter regret and immediately vowed not to wage any war. He was a follower of Buddhism and remained a peace-loving king for a lifetime.
