The Hirakud Dam was the first post-independence river project. It is located 15 km north of Sambalpur, the longest dam in the world. It is a complex structure built across the Mahanadi River. It was created for irrigation and flood control. The Hirakund Dam is approximately 4.8 km long, with pottery borders on the left and right sides. Along the dike, the length of the dam increases to 25.8 km. The storage capacity of Hirakud Dam is 5818 m.

The Hirakud Dam was built to control the flow of the Mahanadi River in Orissa. Before the dam was built, there was a drought in the lower basin and strong flooding in the upper plains. With the construction of this dam, the problem was eliminated so that water flow could be controlled at the desired location. In addition, the dam generates hydroelectric power, thus utilizing natural resources and technology.
